In this post we are going to Jeju Island! Based on my searches, people with standard Korean dialect or the other dialects could not be able to understand Jeju dialect so easily because as in the other dialects Jeju dialect doesn't only change the sound of the verbs, it has also a totally different sets of words.
Jeju is a geographically isolated area which is the biggest island of South Korea. Because of this isolation, it has a different dialect as you guess. UNESCO accepted Jeju dialect as the critically endangered languaged in 2011, which means that UNESCO accepts Jeju dialect as a different language.
Jeju dialect is gramatically same but as there are lots of different words in this dialect, the mainland Korean people cannot understand. There are lots of old Korean words imported from Japan, China and Mongollians. And, for your information: the last Mongolian invasion was in the 14th century! You can guess how old these words are!
If I can give you some examples, the words like 송키 ["vegetable"], 오름 ["mountain"], 야개기 ["neck"], 가사 ["umbralla"] are feeble connection with the standard Korean.
Vowel conjunctions are also different in Jeju dialect such as instead of main honorific ~요, ~ㅂ서 is used. For example, 오세요 --> 옵서 ["Please come."]).
If you want to use honorific question, instead of ~ㅂ니까 , ~꽈 is used like in 아닙니까? --> 아니꽈? ["Isn't it?"]).
And, while we learned the Jeju dialect, how about watching a short video in which you can experience the Jeju dialect in a func way?
In the video, the white bear speaks in Jeju dialect. And the father also says some sentences in Jeju dialect, too. However, the other two bears have totally no idea what is going on! :)
When you watch this, you can understand that even the simple "annyeonghaseyo" (hi) has a totally different saying in Jeju.
- Baekho 백호 (NU'EST 뉴에스트)
- Dayoung 다영 (Cosmic Girls 우주소녀)
- Heechul 희철 (ZE:A 제아)
- Jinhwan 진환 (iKon 아이콘)
- Mimi 미미 (Oh My Girl 오마이걸) [Moved to Changwon-si 창원시, Gyeongsangnam-do 경상남도]
- Seungkwan 승관 (Seventeen 세븐틴)
- Soyou 소유 (SISTAR 씨스타)
There are lots of familiar names, right?
I hope you enjoy this post as I do. We nearly came half of the saturi way! :) Let's finish with Jeju dialect as I always do;
Welcome. Thank you for visit.
